listening to Spence on the chinese revolutionary wars now i can't keep track of what's going on. it is a complete clusterfuck. chiang is flitting between leftists, the KMT has its own factions, lenin and trotsky are trying to control everything and fighting one another

anyway someone had this set of problems
-
They both did, but Mao moved between two different agricultural zones and had to worry about betrayal. The KMT was trying to break large land owners who were generally opposed to the Nationalist revolution when they weren’t viewed by nationalists as parasites

acceptable/believable latifunda distribution: evergreen problem of any general
-
I think the very real opposition to any kind of latifunda at all was a general characteristic of Chinese theorists across the board. Even liberals and old school conservatives who wanted a monarchy basically opposed landlordism

One ghing to remember about Mao was that he had no direction from Moscow during this period but his actions or lack of them were regularly used in Moscow to attack chinese communists for being over eager. Stalinist theory was all in on CKS at that point.
