... I don't think many in China make that connection? As in, democracy and the KMT connection does not immediately leap up. Also, the KMT and the ROC (b4 the wars) is not a immediate hit either, one is romanticised nicely, one not so much. Admittedly I am unusually oblivious...

i don't think they usually articulate it in this way but i've never met a chinese person who wasn't politely dismissive of the idea that china might be a democracy in a way that unambiguously indicated they thought this proposal completely unhinged

Their is zero folk memory of democracy because The KMT didn’t make any show of democracy, they didn’t really have elections and they didn’t have popular ones. They sure didn’t on Taiwan because of the emergency.

This is such an outsider’s view... peolple don’t have much memory about cultural revolution and would actively avoid talking about it. Its name barely makes it in history books, without much relevant text. People might be biased against democracy, but it’s for other reasons
