The search for modern china* he has also amazing writing/lectures on the exchange between the jesuits and the imperial court. Qianglong is already over-arrogant decline. The true apex was Kangxi.

Kangxi was quite impressed with western knowledge, was not narrow-minded like Qianglong. He also favored Castiglione’s art, though when he made a portrait for the emperor of his son he believed that western chiaroscuro, rather than accurately light the face
