my take is that 1. i am more okay with a default legal arrangement than a legally privileged arrangement, and i think it’s still important to take a lot of the stuff tied to marriage currently (i think social security benefits were an example) and make it independent of marriage.

and once you’ve done that abolishing marriage is much less important to me, but i still feel icky about government-sanctioned defaults for things because the government makes bad choices sometimes and i don’t want it to have more influence on culture than it needs to

i used to share your specific idea about this and now I dont as much as I used to for boring reasons probably a marginal movement in this direction would be useful but maybe less than youd think
