been thinking about this lately also been thinking the US is relatively badly positioned in a cultural sense, in that our political structure is in some sense our culture and maybe we have a harder time riding out changes to that structure without fracturinghttps://twitter.com/mr_archenemy/status/1336727781636513796 …

like france has the advantage of being composed of The French but what are Americans without the United States?

There is certainly a large political coalition in the US that substantially associates culture and politics/political structure

It's just communication speed. There was a lot of political upheaval when printing press + literacy got off the ground. It's not because people finally discovered the truth, it's that they were able to form larger, more coherent tribes with less friction.

Eventually we reached steady state. Same now. Social media + internet literacy happened circa 2008. This is having a fundamentally similar effect as printing press + literacy. Now people can form tribes on a national scale with very little friction.

This is also chicken or egg imo, but also the idea of what we “should be”is sooooo far apart rn.

It's hard for me to imagine a civil *war* instead of a civil fracturing. If Texas decided to leave the union, I sure as hell wouldn't go to war to keep them in, and I'm guessing vice versa.

You think your political structure is tied to your culture? Try living in Not America and still being tied to your culture.

If said General is De Villiers, better simply ignore. He's regularly proposed as a potential dictator-let's fix it-guy by far right groups for at least 15 years. Civil war is very unlikely, Paris is France roughly speaking and Paris and the administration are all in Macron

Hard to explain to foreigners but the degree to which France is a a centralised power is INSANE. To the point the the Vth Republic regime has been called "Presidential Monarchy" by political scientists. Even if the country is burnt to the ground the system will stay
