you would have to string up every vaccinologist and then you wouldn't have any vaccine to get mad about which is a solution, i guess

no but they agree with the fda and with all the other regulatory bodies across the world who haven't moved noticeably faster than the fda on this front because this stuff is ingrained in the culture of biomedical science

maybe we are too risk averse as a field but that's what you'd have to change, the whole field you could remove the fda from the equation entirely and moderna and pfizer probably wouldn't have moved much faster than they did

it would be very easy for the government to deploy a contract rationally trading vaccine quantity and speed against safety

halvorz I dont know what to tell you except you are completely wrong about the operation of firms and regulators and their responsiveness to monetary incentives and liability structuring

No, I really don't want to kill people. Or help billions in fraud. Admittedly, that just resolves as me never touching certain industries that are printing money right now. But I'll never work for a hospital, because my boredom + their safety needs would be bad.

In the long run, no you're not wrong and private equity vultures exist so let's use them to our advantage. Of course, the long run is that liability structuring changes *back* to screw the corporations ala the Pinto.

I mean, yes, GM ignition switches come to mind, but making an *explicit* tradeoff between safety and speed of vaccine development seems like a way bigger pr issue? i mean, it's basically "death panels" x1000. damage could be very costly i imagine

as I have stated elsewhere, I think the question of regulatory approval is probably a bit of moot point anyway because production capacity is still very limited

I mean I suspect the American public in particular would not take well to a rushed vaccine deployment with uncertainty over its safety.
