one interesting thing about the revolutionary era is that french elites basically didnt believe in themselves anymore when the revolution came but the english did fine i guess the bourgeoisie had already basically won there and was well-integrated into the elite hmmm

He wrote a book about 1688. He has some argument about countries without a lot of trade being prone to dictatorship after revolutions because they can crack down on information without destroying their tax base

that seems pretty plausible to me honestly modernizing --> major change to system, many incumbents stand to lose a lot, outsiders have much to gain, entire future up for grabs
