the creation of an intellectual eLiTe that gets negligible exposure to the history of western civilization and intellectual history in particular is probably the greatest curse of our time I am so mad about this instead we have distribution requirements in psychology good god

one interesting thing about the revolutionary era is that french elites basically didnt believe in themselves anymore when the revolution came but the english did fine i guess the bourgeoisie had already basically won there and was well-integrated into the elite hmmm

still kind of incoherent but present era feels more similar to the late 18C to me than eg early 20C, much more first industrial revolution than second suspect american students are very badly served by focusing so much on ww2 instead of the Napoleonic wars

I signed up for a Russian history class back in my community college days, but when it got canceled due to a lack of interest, I was quite mad. I took an econ 102 class instead, which was arguably more useful (it also redpilled me, but that's a different story)

My sentiments too. AP World and European History covered more ground in greater depth than Western Civ. 1500 to present because the prof teaching it had a South American specialty he wanted to share with everyone. Which is fine, but not what I wanted or expected from the course.
