one reason to read or listen to Durant is that he tells history as a series of interwoven biographies its not a great men theory, rather he illustrates generations as the time of men of letters, arms, and faith; and the Times are an outgrowth of their personalities and ideas

interesting. Individual humans basically do not show up in my Europe/Middle East/North Africa history from Muhammad till... Napoleon. I find myself content with history of technology, elucidation of economic systems. E.g. Martin Luther was unremarkable, could've been anyone else.

My Medieval History prof defined the Middle Ages as the time between Augustine of Hippo and Cola di Rienzo, between which no autobiographies were written in The West. (looking it up, I think he was wrong about Rienzo)

even so that's a fascinating claim! A millennium give or take without an extant autobiography? Was there some kind of taboo?

Prof said it was reflective of the spirit of the times - medieval Christendom did not encourage that sort of behavior, despite having made Augustine a Doctor of the Church. Wikipedia has nothing between Augustine and Abelard in the 12th Century, and then more in the late 1400s.
