one reason to read or listen to Durant is that he tells history as a series of interwoven biographies its not a great men theory, rather he illustrates generations as the time of men of letters, arms, and faith; and the Times are an outgrowth of their personalities and ideas

interesting. Individual humans basically do not show up in my Europe/Middle East/North Africa history from Muhammad till... Napoleon. I find myself content with history of technology, elucidation of economic systems. E.g. Martin Luther was unremarkable, could've been anyone else.

you can get this sense whenever there are ample writings left from a period--compare the personalities of the Roman Revolution generation Cicero, Caesar, Pompey, these were PEOPLE, we have their letters and attestations!
