And it's true in reverse. Look at that long low stretch that ends in the early 70s, and the glory of the mid-late 90s, which is objectively the greatest period of human history. $19/barrel in Feb '99!

Suez, Red Sea, and GOA are vital to keep clear for trade. The oil in the area mostly goes to Eurasia but it was cut off it would drive up costs here too. The big issue, and what we saw with ISIS, is how instability in one country can spread so rapidly and threaten allies.

One other thing, geographically it is great staging area. You can reach out and touch a lot of places in the world and, depending on who your enemies are, the fact you could cut off huge chunks of their oil supply and their ability to ship supplies could be critical.
