Cousin is an Econ prof. Modern Econ PhD programs are mostly just high level math. The coveted job at the end of the program is an Econ professorship (~$200k) but those roles are scarce so if you are struggling you drop out and Bezos will pay you $400k to optimize pricing algos.

Yeah these were exceptions but the point was that “losing” the professor dream usually meant a huge win financially. My consultancy will pay dudes 5K for a single weekend working with some client datasets.
