possible basing options: djibouti, australia, diego garcia as for ships, navy's already stretched thin by pacom and centcom deployments I think

frankly I kinda think it's insane that we deploy aircraft carriers at all in peacetime when every theater we're currently operating in we have adequate bases on land

It's also insane that we keep investing in more carriers when WWII already showed they are exceptionally vulnerable when put into the role of stationary airfields rather then hunting around the ocean. It's not like it's gotten easier to kill large ships or anything.

nuclear submarines clearly rule the seas today but I see significant value to the carriers in a taiwan scenario

the way this plays out in my mind is, you have surface combatants halfway between there and china providing missile defense to guam/2nd island chain, carriers providing them with air cover, then a 2nd set of surface combatants providing BMD to the carriers

this could be totally off base I don't know but that's what seems logical to me carriers remain within range of land based air cover, while the surface combatants remain within range of carrier air cover

The biggest issue in the Taiwan scenario, besides subs, is China's land based anti-ship missiles. They outrange the carriers strike range. There's also serious concerns about the capabilities of screening ships to protect the carrier against multiple missiles.

Combined with the artificial islands and other strategies to expand their reach into the China sea there is a serious question as to whether a carrier group can even get close enough to attack, much less what the US population would think when a carrier is inevitably lost.

Now there's also questions as to whether China actually has the capability to target carriers at sea as well as the actual effectiveness of their missiles. So it's certainly not a clear cut situation.

Artificial islands are in the south china sea which is a separate theater and yeah that's a tough nut to crack Point is, the surface combatants can provide midcourse ballistic missile defense (which is in many ways easier than terminal defense) and the carriers protect them

seems like artificial islands are also easy to hit with ballistic missiles no?

Yes, my understanding is the amount of munitions it would take to get through their air defenses at this point though would be costly and possibly better used in other areas hang on let me post some pics

okay so first image: my (possibly totally uninformed) notion of what the surface fleet would be doing second image: different relevant theaterspic.twitter.com/MQdptDODD7
