the idea that we can't endure many casualties is an outgrowth of the 90s when we mulched the Iraqis for almost no loss then pulled out of Somalia after like 20 people died. But that hasn't actually happened again.

I can't remember who but someone argued that America's constant small wars were a signal to the Russians and Chinese that we really were willing to get our guys killed for a principle.

I wonder how China would hold up once caskets start coming home. They've not suffered losses for a while and domestically they completely rely on the perception of winning, whereas the US never stops accusing itself of failing.
