one interesting thing is how much less materialistic american society has become since the 90s or maybe rather materialism is lower status now

You don’t think it might just be a lifecycle thing? You’re not a teenager any more and by now you’re probably more secure in your status. Furthermore with family on the way it’s normal for one to “put away childish things.”

The internet forced a real sea change in the way advertising and name recognition work, I'm not sure we are less materialistic in a philosophical sense but our relationship to material culture sure is different.

Seems like the compulsion to choose a brand was replaced to an extent by the compulsion to be able to tell certain stories about the things you own and do. (I don't and didn't care about any of these)

Big brands now also seem to minimize their own presence. A minimal aesthetic, quiet and reverent advertisement. I think it's a mostly natural evolution. Audacious commercialism can only be ephemeral. The warring period has ended: it's peace time now.
