There is an air to Sanderson of the sci-fi in the best sense - there is something IMPORTANT taking place here, something speculative in abstract intellect that could even change the reader. But because it doesn't have the limitations of sci-fi, I think its 100x better

As a lot of sci-fi does nowadays, his books ask important questions about the nature of reality, the difference between the illusory and the true, the human and the divine... But this sweet and heady mix is just the dessert to the savory just-as-it-ought-to-be mythology...

In short, Brandon Sanderson, in his books with fairies and swords that can cut through almost anything, embraces more of the human reality than many contemporary authors of 'literature', sci-fi, or anything else

P.S. The Stormlight Archive is only now on the fourth book (of ten). If this sounds like too much of an undertaking or you're worried you'll get Martin'd, you should start with the Mistborn Trilogy, which is complete and will blow your mind right out

naw if you want fantasy books you can't finish and won't understand you should try R. Scott Bakker and if you want ones that shouldn't be finished because they don't contain anything worth understanding, there's Steven Erikson
