Many of them don't, because in practice politics isn't a single line. Varying levels of confidence in institutions; in caring about specific issues. And there are some (particularly those who prioritise climate) who view compromise on certain issues as an existential threat too.

Also, lots of people don't really understand existential threats and haven't thought about balancing risks. They may genuinely believe that e.g. global warming is an existential threat, but not be radically changing their behaviour. Akrasia exists in political beliefs too.
