... insist that all 'money in politics' is essentially corrupting, favor strict controls (a la 'Citizens') that would simply create more incentive for under-the-table influence rather than out in the open, etc.

yes i too am horrified it seems like it might be an inevitable consequence of empire; compare w the notorious behavior of republic proconsuls exactly how bad it is practically depends on (i) whether it is more like bribery or extortion; (ii) how (i) varies by country

the main risks are (i) politicians extort friends, engendering resentment and making them not friends anymore, or (ii) accept bribes from enemies to change our policy to our disadvantage, weakening our strategic position
