i’m reading about the controversy over Tuscon Unified School District’s Mexican-American studies program (in which the school board tried to make the classes elective) and i’ve noticed something interesting

on the one hand several of the students went to pretty great lengths to protest the resolution (and i think students getting involved of the politics of the schools they go to is super based)

but there also seems to be this attitude that the classes *must* be taught, and that they *must* be mandatory (the resolution, after all, was only to make them elective) as if you can’t learn things outside of school

many of them, when they introduced themselves at the beginning of the year, said something along the lines of that they didn’t have any chicano studies classes offered in high school, so they ‘weren’t able’ or ‘didn’t have the opportunity to’ learn about their history
