Yeah, armor only helps you when you're wearing it and you get hit by a round it is capable of stopping. Your best bet is probably a concealable 3A vest that you can actually wear a majority of the time. If you're incredibly concerned about rifle rounds get a dual rated 3/4 plate.

I chose ‘no point’, but there’s a very small asterisk I’d add. If you really want armor, and are in a financial position to responsibly do so, there are worse things to blow a grand on. Or if you somehow already had a carrier but no plates might as well get ‘em
