Story time. At my undergrad in first year physics lectures someone brought their girlfriend. A quiz is given: “If you cut off a broom at the point on the handle where you could balance it over your forearm, which side will be heavier?” >

(looks around): “Ah, I have never seen you in lecture before, so maybe you should answer this one. Are you taking first year physics?”
: “I am [classmate]’s gf. I study psychology at [Outgroup University]”
: “Ahh, (feigned derisive excitement) psychology!”1 reply 0 retweets 5 likes -

: Okay, in order to not embarrass your bf you ought to try this one, it’s kinda common sense.
...:”Okay they should have equal mass and weight right? That’s how things get to be in equilibrium if the forces are the same on both sides.”1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

: “Hence demonstrating why you are studying psychology! At [Outgroup University]!” (Eruption of laughter in the classroom).3 replies 0 retweets 4 likes -

Nah, the handle side is lighter. For similar reasons as why you can play on a seesaw with a much lighter person as long as you are closer to the fulcrum.

oh yeah I knew that (from Michael Spivak's physics book actually) the problem confused me now because I didn't visualise it properly, thanks

Do you reckon that Spivak’s mechanics book is the most friendly one to a very mathematical... soul for lack of a better term.

it's very verbose, it has everything but the phrases somehow take you to nowhere, if that means something
