eigenrobot added,
is there a name i can evoke for "destabilizing enduring institutions is actually bad" cowen talks about this a lot but i don't have any excellent quotes on this
any quotes or works you can point out?
Oh you want something snappier Hum
I don't mean to nitpick I've heard this Idea thrown around a lot and don't have anything foundational in the way of explaining the argument to other people that is, institutions that survive for a long time have deep value that often exceeds the problem you are trying to solve
the really terse version thats usually kicked around here is chestertons fence but thats kind of a narrow case sarah perry had something about load-bearing tacit functions back in her viewfromhell days I think
The fence is a fine starting place, but it's the tip of the iceberg I'll need to dig around for where I got this impression, but C seems to be on the side that preferably you never do away with ANY long-lasting institution because of the myriad unknown dangers of doing so
The fence is also the most sketchy example possible. If you see a fence and you don't know what it's for, it's more likely than not that it's about structural violence and should be destroyed all else equal.
