pretty sure at least some animals are aware of the connection which makes me think humans intuitively understood it before anatomically modern humans existed

vaguely recall stallions on horse herds will kill offspring of other males to bring mares back into heat which suggests they understand the connection

there are definitely instincts that govern how we and other animals choose mates. not sure that constitutes evidence that we instinctually understand the relationship btw sex and reproduction

actually, the studies re: women choosing more masculine guys around ovulation and that response being blunted with birth control, without conscious appraisal, makes me wonder how conscious this all is
