eigenrobot added,
I still sort of do (or at least find it hard to unlearn) and still think it's not a really bad strategy for normal people because what's the alternative for them?
You can just be comfortable with "I don't know." As a former scientist, that is the appropriate response for non-scientists. Media summaries are terrible and manipulative, *researchers* are often activits aiming to manipulate.
It takes a lot of expertise to understand when and why experts should be ignored. But the "when" is often enough that non-experts are better off rejecting the whole thing that accepting the whole thing. THAT BEING SAID...
If you reject the whole thing, don't replace it with another method of knowledge, because it will invariably be far, far worse than science. The KEY, here, is to be comfortable with not knowing. it's okay to not know.
So you just give up on epistemology? :( I've been coming to this conclusion, but it's a really uncomfortable position especially when the new environment expects you to have definite positions on stuff where it's impossible to know
hmm--when/where are you expected to have positions? genuinely curious about this one exercise is, imagine you were teleported to say 500AD Germany what do you think ideal epistemology would be like, given the tools available?
