I'm more than willing to believe these societies practiced infanticide but the 50% rate makes no sense to me given how dangerous childbearing and early childhood were in premodern societies. How would they reach a replacement-level TFR?

I was super into Demause when I was like 19, partially because I liked the Asimovian idea of "Psychohistory". In hindsight, he had a few interesting insights, but his work is honestly 95% crankery assembled to support his Grand Theory.

Silver lining of that interest was it did lead me to write my undergrad thesis on infanticide in slave populations.

Can't speak to the specifics like the strangling and stuff, but generally infanticide like this is not an uncommon practice.
