I remember at 14 I had enough grasp of style to realize that clothes that were tight around my waist were flattering on me, but not enough grasp to understand that cargo shorts + baggy tshirt cinched at the waist by an elastic headband on top wasn't the best way to achieve this

this is true... my parents generally refrained from commenting on my fashion choices, except for things like booty shorts, and one occasion when I came downstairs and my mellow dad threw his hands up and said in exasperation "ok, that is too much eyeliner"

boys I think have a very different experience but it took until I was 19 to stop dressing like a dufus weirdly it was ROTC that gave me a sense of self awareness about style

I'm obv not a parent but I have the sense that if something doesn't cause permanent injury it's not a big deal if kids wanna do it just make sure to take a lot of photos so that you can make fun of them for not taking your advice when they grow up

Help them develop taste. Ask what they think if various outfits in media or fashion or whatever. Discuss it
