Why do people get so into arguing about matters of preference like this? It's usually light-hearted fun, but when genuine strong feelings crop up, which is pretty common, what's that about? Taste as identity formation/defense + social signalling?

My guess is that, in general, tiny perceived social threats sometimes escalate. The original topic's lighthearted tone can dampen these spirals but can't eliminate them.
