hmm seems like long peace is rare in history we've functionally been at peace for a long time
good enough. :) the 19C war era feels pretty real too fought abroad mostly but it touched everything

"William Russell, Special Correspondent of the Times" is worth a read, on that subject: a window into history, when a) there were a lot of wars on, and b) reporters gallivanted around on horseback through the battlefields.

At one point, Mr. Russell sees, through a spyglass, the bore of a cannon pointing directly at him. At another, during the Franco-Prussian War, he chanced upon Bismarck and the Kaiser observing the battle, and decided to hang out to watch the rest.
