i bet one implication of this is that just about everyone here is pretty smart and that is not a good way to get status, better to flex some more interesting comparative advantagehttps://twitter.com/sonyasupposedly/status/1304553541017583616 …

I do not want to believe that there is a cognitive underclass as implied by the precursor to the quoted tweet I generally believe that thinking is exercise-like -- capacity expands with use I'm more inclined to believe many people have untapped potential than low-cap potential

The statistic inevitability of some people being below average is obvious and easy to grasp I think my particular squick is the idea that some people are capped at some arbitrary low point I think it's because it relies heavily on how we model other people

I don't really trust my evaluation of someone to be accurate when talking about potential. You can see how much water is in the glass at arbitrary points but I don't know that you can fully estimate the shape of the glass Perpetually back-evaluating based on new observed peaks

Things to consider Is it upsetting to you that many people will not attain the height of six feet, or be conventionally beautiful? No matter how you answer, does this change how you think about height or physical beauty?

Hmm! Do you think you could explain how ""intelligence""" whatever that is, is different here?

I think it stems from the thought I mentioned before about thinking being like brain exercise However even there I have to admit that not everyone can be an Olympian So it may be a combination of that and thinking being not obviously material

But I would also say that my goal wrt such wouldn't be to make everyone an Olympian, it would be to keep them from obesity Maybe that's still useful

I think it probably is! Feels like maybe one problem is we don't know how to help people get fit Or maybe we're already maxxing out those gainz Or maybe it really is more like height? Really hard to say :(

At the moment their progress stops, the reaction matters a lot too Like if you're filling a container with water and all you can tell is whether it's leaking or not Is it cracked (fixable) and the container has greater capacity still? Or is it already at its limit?
