i bet one implication of this is that just about everyone here is pretty smart and that is not a good way to get status, better to flex some more interesting comparative advantagehttps://twitter.com/sonyasupposedly/status/1304553541017583616 …

I do not want to believe that there is a cognitive underclass as implied by the precursor to the quoted tweet I generally believe that thinking is exercise-like -- capacity expands with use I'm more inclined to believe many people have untapped potential than low-cap potential

I just really don't like the implications of "I won a genetic lottery and no matter how noble my intentions I cannot help those who did not" If I accept it then I have to also accept that some people when fully realized will still be utterly mediocre

in one sense yes if this upsets you quite a lot you might consider whether this is an unnecessary consequence of assumptions embedded in your evaluation of what makes a life worthy of dignity, or worth living

but also yeah it fucking sucks, there's no justice except that which we make ourselves, and I hate it

Thankfully I do not attach dignity wholesale to intellect, or I'd already be hopelessly miserable thinking about this I think so long as persons have unrealized potential (in any sphere) which could improve their state, it is still worthwhile to try to bolster them

My hunch is that very few people are capped below a certain minimum across all spheres that would exclude them from seeking and fulfilling their own sense of dignity + meaning Maybe it is difficult because they have to hit 90% of their cap in X and for others it is 40%

But if one is invested in that person or their community at large and excels in one sphere, making an effort to draw that person along is a noble effort Can't take personal responsibility for outcome or you'd probably get the psychosis that certain parents get abt their children

Also can't do it for everyone, that'll probably hurt the helper as they get overly strained Maybe just people in your circle for whom you have peer or mentor relationships? Is this in a sense an argument for nepotism?

I think it's more Like, building communities where a broader array of traits are valued and its expected that a place is found for everyone (??) I bet there's a lot of choicelessness here tho You can't do it in places where individualism is unusually strong

My reflex is to agree with all but the last statement I consider myself to value individualism very strongly, but one of my personal values is local community investment I want to reach my goals, but one of them is to see my friends and neighbors do well

Maybe it has friction with individualism because in general one might say that other people "doing well" would be "doing something that provides value to me or my environment" in the pure libertarian sense
