if someone is trying to pick a fight with you an easy flex is complimenting them a genuine compliment will simply confuse them, a fulsome-but-plausibly-deniable compliment will mog them but may make them really angry

the interesting thing about this to me – is how it demonstrates that you can choose to *completely* ignore a person's statement. on the surface of it, this can seem rude, even narcissistic, &it's easy to imagine how it might be bungled, but wielded artfully it's a real power move

I think one of my implicit assumptions as a baby conversationalist slash internet argumentarian was "I have to address everything you put on the table" – which is great in some contexts but it's also a "press this to hijack my time and attention" button
