the real beauty of it is not just meeting disagreeableness with affability its further that you've made something Nice, about Them, the battlefield they COULD disagree with you (their tactical inclination) but if they do they're suddenly arguing . . . against themselves!!

Empathy works too. "I really hear that you are angry and frustrated right now." has saved me from more than one tit-for-tat marital argument. Bonus - it works as a fake-it-til-you-make it technique if you really really just don't think the anger is justified :P
