I think he's not smirking about it--read elsewhere in the book and you get the sense he has thrown down a Lot and is intimately familiar I'm not smirking either, my main reaction to reading has been awe and recognition of atavism I had long ignored

When I red it I had many memories flashback of violent instant that I personally experienced. His way to break down the mechanism makes you notice things you just felt at the time.

I think it's worth it for the neophyte (me) but I'd guess you'll you'll either find it a beautiful revelation via systematization of things you already knew or you'll get bored in ten minutes because it's old hat to you
