I think he's not smirking about it--read elsewhere in the book and you get the sense he has thrown down a Lot and is intimately familiar I'm not smirking either, my main reaction to reading has been awe and recognition of atavism I had long ignored

The monkey dance can be easily short circuited, just make eye contact, acknowledge their presence, nod, and go about your business. It’s very important that you’re not looking away, you’re looking at something else. At this point the first game is over.
