I think you are confusing 'science' done as natural philosophy by the ancients and 'science' done by people who are part of the liberal order. A phase change occurred in the 16th century and the old science got supplanted.

In a non-liberal (old definition from 18th century or so) community, science isn't really free to self-correct. In the liberal order, there is no one really capable of preventing it. That means the Young Guns take down the Old Dogs occasionally.
