I haven't told anyone in my family or above-board social groups that I have firearms wouldn't recommend they strap up either, unless things got much worse and I were worried about their safety much more immediately because they would have an absolute wig seshhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1303784785395867648 …

To be fair I didn't really bother to say anything to family or in laws either. We _might've_ mentioned something once or twice in the latter half of February but we'd already started stocking up and looking at houses by then. Cha would probably remember better than I.

I didn't think they'd believe me among other reasons.

ooh, interesting theory in general, the System DOES protect the upper middle class (system = representative government, savings, status etc that can be called upon) proles protect themselves with things: "do not enter" signs, guns, fierce dogs self help = signal low status
-
Self help feels like the wrong word here, maybe self protection fits better? (Im swedish and have no idea what guns are like)

I think it would entail a complete crisis of faith. You have to start believing that violence can be pervasive and random (rather than having some identifiable cause, whether gang affiliation or mere poverty), that institutions are generally incapable of defending you...
-
...that you are the kind of person someone would target (opportunistically or personally), that self-help is legitimate (and thus must be universalized even to the Outgroup)...
