I have no idea, the area they're fighting over is like 15,000 feet up or something ridiculous, just a bunch of barren rocks, with no economic or strategic value whatsoever

China has a highway nearby that connects to Tibet to Xinjiang that is essential for Tibetan integration. The highway is on disputed territory that India and China already fought a war over in 1962.

Recently India secured its authority over the region of Kashmir that it administers, by stripping Kashmir of much of its autonomy. It ended the Kashmiri constitution, split the state in two, removed the state govt and put Kashmir under the President's rule.

Imposed curfew on residents, banned mobile internet services for 6 months or so. This was opposed by both Pakistan and China, and likely triggered the Chinese into putting more distance between the LOAC and the highway

yeah there's no connection between kashmir, the highway, and this escalation the highway is like 70 miles inside Chinese-controlled territory over logistically impassible terrain.

stupidity, evil, and incompetence seems like the most parsimonious explanation to me. Perhaps with a dash of principal agent problems with local PLA officers.
