@eigenrobot yo, what's the problem with free college? California has free college for poor people, it's not too big a deal budgetwise since most people can't / don't want to go. it's not like everyone gets free admission & tuition at a state university.

oh boring things antiprogressive, inefficient allocation, probably mostly results in transfer to schools

specifically the admins at the school, yeah... if it were somehow stipulated to mostly go to profs, aides &c that'd be kinda cool. cuz they're the personnel that would be in greater demand with more attendance anyway. I don't really see the "antiprogressive" angle?

College admits and grads are a disproportionately wealthy demographic. Subsidizing them with finite government money is regressive.

i always figured the $250k+ (say) parental income crowd would still have to pay. but anyway looking it up, it seems up to half of all college students attend community colleges. they're proportionately poor (and, incidentally, drop out before completion 80% of the time)

Community college is a lot cheaper to subsidize, and yeah, better targets those in need. That seems pretty reasonable and does exist in some states, as I think you referred to above. https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/28/us/california-free-community-college-tuition-trnd/index.html …
