feels like its sort of tweaking semantics like generally one would think of a designed or contrived social interaction scheme as being inorganic as the term is usually used

That brings up the question of agency and intention. Why are people doing circling if they're not there of their own free will?

Contrivance implies, to me, a mismatch between intent and process/result. Just because circling didn't work for person X or took place in contrived context Y doesn't mean the practice doesn't hold value or has those negative qualities inherently.
