The year is 2045 Protesters in the United States are expressing their discontent by burning down random businesses and blocking freeways Do you support this form of protest?

Suppose
#BLM were to abandon arson, assault, and traffic violations and simply peacefully protested at police funerals That would be ok right?Show this thread -
Suppose
#BLM moved to peacefully protesting outside of hospitals that treat injured police w/ signs showing horrifying gory images of police murders of kids and pets to pressure hospitals to stop treating police No one could object to this protest form right?Show this thread -
I genuinely dont have a point Just trying to map out tribalism vs systematic approaches to protest validity evaluation and what that even means The whole space feels pretty underconsidered and discourse around it is awful

this especially because protests are intrinsically transgressive "When is transgression not Bad transgression" "well when its Good transgression" ok well then Im not attacking anyone with this its just hard to work past this knot internally Hm

This is pretty helpful on one dimension although I don't think it's a systematic resolution itself Showing up at (eg) a private residence of a public figure feels like a massive escalation over protesting that figure's office Hm. Its an angle. https://twitter.com/TieCrimes/status/1299016444345233408?s=19 …

Maybe another useful angle is separating "protest" from "insurrection," which at least makes protest evaluation relatively straightforward (private vs public space, former to be deprecated) but leaves one with the problem of evaluating insurrection validity

Insurrections seem less a matter of principle and more a matter of politics. Do I support the aims of the insurrection? Is it likely to succeed in its aims? Are the costs of the insurrection worth the benefits, in expectation? These may and must be evaluated casewise (good).

What are the weak points of this taxonomy? I think I like it and it solves a lot of motte/bailey issues in rhetoric that maybe have been dominating lately, and while there are some issues around bright dividing lines I think in practice they're relatively minor.

And my sincere apologies to
@MusingsOfYouth for dismissing his idea before ultimately adopting it wholesalehttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1254995823718313984?s=19 …Show this thread
