Many people who discover LessWrong Rationality for the first time fall into a valley where it makes them worse at thinking and living for a while. It causes many people to forswear Rationality in anger. Here are the symptoms of the Valley of Bad Rationality:https://twitter.com/yashkaf/status/1298056240887734272 …

How do you prove you're not a brain in a vat? How do you justify induction other than by induction? Maybe rationality is not the best philosophy but it's better than chronic existential doubt about your own sanity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

but these are not the only options!! Rationalism is a fun tool to play with, just like mysticism or existentialism or magic or faith; ultimately it’s up to an individual to piece fragments together (individuation) and find a path (virtue) to fulfilment and happiness (eudaemonia)

Epistemic rationality exists to help you avoid stupid pain. A simple metric is "am I in pain right now?" Then, "Am I setting myself up to be in pain later?"; you can't always know that but you often can. Of course, we would also like good things to happen but that's a baseline.
