That's not how I'd get into guns personally; pistols are just more difficult to shoot accurately than rifles, but I get it.

A lot of people recommend a .22 rimfire for a first gun, which is good primarily because of the ammo cost - you can typically afford to shoot 5-15x as much as centerfire - but, it's hard to go wrong with an AR-15 with mild recoil, good ergos, cheaper ammo.

It's a good default rifle because it can do anything a new gun owner might want from it Defense: put on a light & sling Hunting: 223 is proven for varmint and coyote Long range slow fire: CMP & Hi-Power comp Close rapid fire: 3gun comp Range toy: cheap ammo, semi, mild recoil

And from there, you have a better idea of what you like or want, and can branch out into a more specialized rifle if you so decide - like a handy .308 bolt action for hunting, something odd & interesting like an AUG if you like range toys, etc.
