So there's concentric circles, with a tight core, some middle bands, and the periphery. Which circle you're in DOESN'T correlate much with how serious you are about epistemology / growth / figuring out the world / becoming stronger / whatever.

As the years tick by, people's personal practices improve. Folks are exploring and running into core blockers and finding solutions to them. So some people in the core, who started by focusing on Fermi estimates and Aumann-ing, discover Focusing and Circling.

They learn to respect Chesterton's fences, both internally and culturally. They move towards a paradigm of internal dialogue. They realize that emotions are important, and narratives are important, and ontologies are important.

But this doesn't happen uniformly in the core (there are still folks there who are really into fermi estimates, next to the people who are into trauma-healing), and these discoveries don't propagate from the core through the concentric circles very fast at all.

So the people on the periphery are mostly engaging with the rationalist material of 2009-10. And some of the people on the periphery, who also got a lot from the sequences, are making similar realizations about what's important as some of the people in the rationalist core, are.

So there are multiple groups following parallel trajectories. But the rationalists in the core, feel inclined to think of this as just an extension of "rationality", because they identify as rationalists.

The folks on the periphery, are more inclined to think of it as a different thing, separate from "rationality", which to them, mostly means the rationality of 2009-10. So they call it post-rationality, because they grew out of the the rationality phase.

When I was reading this page, for instance, my thought was that this was obviously important, but that I think that Eliezer or Anna would just include "meta-rationality" as part of "Rationality." It wouldn't be something totally new to them.https://meaningness.com/eggplant/rationality …
