      16. I would wager serious money that somewhere between 5 and 10% of the adult of the US that didn't own a firearm in January, now owns a firearm. It might even be higher. That's fucking unprecedented. It blows out of the water the post 9/11, and Obama-being-elected reactions.

And at the current rate you won’t be able to fire one again until next July. Stupid primer shortage

there are no shortages only prices that fail to clear the market

Considering ammo is currently selling out immediately at any price, and I haven’t even seen pistol primers get stocked anywhere I feel fine calling it a shortage. But I suppose you are technically correct that they probably could be bought from individuals.

You don’t need a very large percent of new shooters wanting to become proficient to massively increase demand. You’ll easily use 1000 to rounds a year if you visit the range bi-monthly. Most serious classes will burn 350-1000. Weekend match shooting is ~100 an event.

Existing owners stockpiling is, of course, another large part. But it’s mostly active people buying so they have enough to keep their shooting habits going until supply returns to normal. Buying 5k+ rounds makes sense if you expect supply to take a year to catch up.

Better example. Let’s say I train regularly and compete. I buy 1k rounds twice a year to do this. Suddenly I see shortages coming. Now I buy all 2k at once, and an extra 1k in case supply lags. And it’s not just me, but everyone active noticing and doing the same with +/- speed.

There was. Early in COVID I got a heads up from supplier friends that everything was about to sellout because they saw orders where going to quickly explode supply. 2 days later you couldn’t buy ammo. Brief respite about 2 months later then it exploded again
