Consider a rational arguments- they often involve directly 'attacking' the other person's points while letting them attack yours. To get anywhere, they typically need lots of time in that state of conflict.

What they have more trouble doing is enthusiastic positive appreciation and other indirect methods- little gifts over time, thoughtful notes of thanks, so on and so forth. This may cost them more energy.
