Were you able to see how they determined the pediatrician's ethnicity?

"Physician race is not coded by the data and is captured from publicly searchable pictures of the physician." non-white, non-black doctors were dropped from the analysis

Judging someone's race by their appearance and somehow validating it by checking their last name just seems a little ridiculous to me, no matter how well trained the person is. It's like some eugenecists validating someone's Jewishness by appearance and last name.

yea it’s not ideal. the question is if you’re gonna do the study, how else could you do it?

You do a modern one where you actually survey doctors and their patients.

you can do that but you’re still dealing with rare events (newborns dying in the hospital) so to draw any inferences you’re gonna need huge sample sizes

If we are drawing as serious a conclusion as black babies have triple the chance of survival with black doctors as they do with white doctors, then I think it's worth it to do it right. The study's exclusion of all other races isn't helpful, either.

the “triple” thing isn’t in the paper, that was misreporting by CNN. and I agree, I don’t see a good reason to leave out other races and focus only on blacks and whites.

what do you imagine are the bad reasons
