This book was written in 1996 and its future is effectively defunct Socially: the Internet /exists/ but people use it like they would as academics in the early 90s, at best Pulling up files and that's it Technologically: ML does not exist
In particular, the setting of this planet is a sort of genetically-engineered caste system built around extensive selective breeding But come on these people have interstellar travel /Selective breeding/ ? This is as far as genomics has advanced in hundreds of years?
