In particular, the setting of this planet is a sort of genetically-engineered caste system built around extensive selective breeding But come on these people have interstellar travel /Selective breeding/ ? This is as far as genomics has advanced in hundreds of years?

It was a super fun read but it feels a bit as if Romans wrote stories of interplanetary travel on chariots pulled by very large horses, and continued to fight with swords in space-battles (Yeah I know about the one) So I suppose not so far from Red Mars Still Bit bewildering

That last sentence is a very good point. So much of sci fi’s appeal lies in prediction and extrapolation and when the curves outlive their usefulness much of it is just anachronism. Seems like fantasy is a genre with more staying power
