So, how this thing works: It's pretty interesting! It's primarily moving a plunger, here. It goes up and down, producing suction or pressure inside that little tube.pic.twitter.com/ySmel1femL

But how do you do automated pipetting with only a single-ended plunger? Simple! That's not the only motor. There's a very accurate servo motor behind here, which rotates an internal piece:pic.twitter.com/GhmLYjH5QH
And then you can get that distribution valve in all sorts of different designs.pic.twitter.com/SjQtrRNIh6
So like, you could have this design. You hook up two tubes to 1 and 2, then rotate to he first position, and can suck 1ml of fluid from 1, then rotate to 2, and dispense half a mlpic.twitter.com/MoRrKOmgxj
So yeah. This thing is basically two servos/stepper motors, a microcontroller, and a syringe & distribution valve.
It's got some interesting functionality in the microcontroller. Like, all the commands are strings, right? so it has an option where you can give it command strings and have them written into the EEPROM, then later you can just call them with a single command.pic.twitter.com/scud7ULscN
That's kinda weird. I'm not sure why you'd really need that. The serial port is plenty fast so this isn't going to be for speed reasons, and you've got to be communicating with it from a computer, right? I guess this makes it usable from a dumb terminal?
They even point out that although each command string can only be 128 bytes long, you can end them with a command to run another command string. So you could in theory link up all 15 strings and have almost 2 kilobytes of program space
Tecan has apparently discontinued it but they used to sell a liquid that they suggested you clean the internals of the product with, which had the great name of ROBO SCRUBpic.twitter.com/tv8UO0X6vJ
Maybe this is why soap doesn't work for me
