Let's not beat around the bush here. A big part of it is: You tend to do stupid things at night. I gained a bit of weight while I was on the "work late into the night" schedule because… well who eats snacks at 5 in the morning? But 11pm? Sure. Same thing for other distractions.

So for me, it really comes down to: "early in the morning" is simply not my "stupid time". Maximizing on the not-stupid time leads to better outcomes. It's effective just like IF is effective - you simply remove a problem instead of constantly trying cleverer ways of solving it.
